(L-R) Kathryn McManus, Debra Faulk of Wells Fargo Bank, and Marc Brechwald enjoy some conversation.

Debra Kent Faulk from Wells Fargo Bank grabbed the attention of AFP Suncoast members and their guests on April 17, 2012, with stories and insights on what it’s like to be a corporate funder and how to best approach a corporate funder for your organization.

Her passion to make meaningful investments in the community and her pride in the work of Wells Fargo Bank was engaging. She hosted an intimate roundtable discussion after the luncheon.

AFP Suncoast Collegiate Chapter

The AFP Suncoast Chapter has successfully created an AFP Collegiate Chapter at the University of South Florida. The AFP Collegiate Chapter program was created in order to educate undergraduate and graduate students about fundraising as a career path and to educate them about philanthropy in general. This organization will also give students the opportunity to establish positive relationships with experienced professionals in the fundraising field.

The first initiative of this chapter is to start a mentor program that pairs a collegiate chapter member with an experienced AFP Suncoast Chapter member. Having a mentor to ask for advice on career planning, current trends in non-profit management, and how to use their college years to prepare for life after college will be an essential piece of their developmental process. We appreciate all of those who have already expressed their interest in getting involved in the mentor program.

The second initiative of the AFP Suncoast Collegiate Chapter is for the students to create, plan, market and execute fundraising events and/or campaigns. The AFP Suncoast Chapter has the ability to provide a full circle experience by facilitating workshops on how to create and properly run an event and/or campaign and then provide immediate feedback on their efforts. It is with this process that the students will enhance their knowledge and experience about the complexities of running a campaign or executing a fundraising event.

Even though the chapter has only been officially chartered since the March 2011 International Board Meeting, the students have been busy. The group has planned and executed two fundraising events, one for the Livestrong Foundation and the other for a student organization at USF, the International Health Service Collaborative. Both of these events were extremely well planned and provided great experience in event planning and collaborating with outside organizations. We look forward to building upon these experiences and expanding our organization to include students from diverse areas of campus and different levels of fundraising experience.

Thank you to the AFP Suncoast Board of Directors for agreeing to support the Collegiate Chapter and to all the Suncoast members who have gotten involved thus far. With your help, we will make the AFP Suncoast Collegiate Chapter a viable resource for tomorrow’s non-profit professionals and a great introduction for the future members of the AFP Suncoast Chapter.
